Which cases are heard here

Canyon County is in the Third Judicial District, which also covers Payette, Washington, Gem, Owyhee and Adams counties. Civil, criminal, family and juvenile matters arising in Canyon County are heard in Caldwell. That includes matters from Nampa, the largest city in the county, which has no district courthouse of its own.

If your address is in Kuna, Meridian, Boise, Eagle or most of Star, you are in Ada County and the Fourth Judicial District, and your matter is heard in Boise instead.

What to bring

• Photo identification.
• Your case number, if you have one. It saves a great deal of time at the counter.
• Every document you have been served with, including the envelope.
• A means of payment if you are filing something or paying a fine.

Courthouses have security screening, so leave anything you would not take through an airport in the car. The screening line at the start of a calendar is the reason most people are late, so arrive earlier than you think you need to.

Paying a fine and finding a case

Fines and fees are paid through the Idaho courts payment portal at mycourts.idaho.gov, or in person at the clerk's office. Case records are searched through the state's iCourt Portal. If what you need is not online, the clerk's office can process a records request.

If you have a hearing

Two things matter more than anything else: do not miss the date, and if you cannot be there, tell your lawyer before the date rather than after. A missed appearance creates a problem that is much harder to fix than the scheduling conflict would have been.

Dress as you would for a job interview, turn your phone off rather than to silent, and expect to wait. Calendars are set in blocks, so being scheduled at 9:00 does not mean being heard at 9:00.
